Dollhouse
In the visual experiment “Dollhouse,” I combine Barbie dolls, hair, and domestic objects to provoke critical contemplation about the arbitrary link between femininity and domesticity. Familiar domestic objects are juxtaposed with the sexualized poses of faceless Barbie dolls’ body parts in carefully arranged sets. As images of domesticity, Barbie often evokes a sense of comfort and stability rooted in traditional family and gender structure. In my visuals, the plastic and lifeless qualities of Barbie contrast to the sense of domestic comfort it usually embodies, forcing viewers to confront the unsettling insertion of sexualized bodies into ostensibly innocent domestic spaces.
